The Modern European Social-Democratic Party: Looking Forward

The Andreas G. Papandreou Foundation within the framework of its wider concern for the promotion of the public dialogue, and in collaboration with Mrs Anna Diamantopoulou, Member of the European Commission, organized a workshop on:

“The Modern European Social-Democratic Party: Looking Forward”

The preparatory as well as the main sessions, were carried out successfully on June 14 & 15 2002, in Divani Apollon Palace Hotel, in the picturesque gulf of Kavouri, Athens.

High on the agenda were crucial topics concerning the structure, function and communication strategy of the modern European social-democratic parties. The aim of the workshop, (leaders and representatives of European Social-democratic parties, specialists on New Technology and Communication matters, members of the academic community and members of the European Parliament participated), was the promotion of a constructive exchange of ideas and to draw useful conclusions on how can European Social-democratic parties best respond to the challenges of globalization and of an enlarged Europe. The main topics of the workshop were as follows:

  • Structure and function of a modern European social-democratic party (participation in the electoral procedures, policy making, ways of member interaction)
  • The relationship with the society
  • The modern European social-democratic party and the information society
  • The modern European social-democratic party and the civil society
